How To Make Money Testing Websites

I’m going to (reluctantly) share my favorite way to make money from home. It is super easy and pays very generously – like $30 an hour generous! A few months ago I heard about this website that pays you to test websites and I thought I’d give it a try. I was afraid it was going to be too good to be true, but I tried it anyway.

The company is called UserTesting and the first thing you have to do is apply to be a tester. After you sign up you will have to download their screen recorder (a software that records your screen and your voice) and take your first user test. This test is not paid, it is part of the application process. Once they review your test, they will let you know if you are accepted to become a user tester. I had to redo my test because my audio settings weren’t loud enough, so check your speaker settings before you test!

Once you become a user tester, log in and visit your dashboard where you will find all available user tests. Some tests have a Screener Test where you answer a few questions to see if you qualify to take the test. Many tests don’t have requirements, you just click on the test to view the description (if there is one) and take the test.

During a user test, you open the screen recorder and visit the website you will be testing (you are automatically redirected to the site). You will have questions to answer (out loud) while you are using the website. The goal is to continuously speak your mind, answer the questions, and share your thoughts and opinions about the website. After the test, there are some written questions to answer. Then, your test will automatically upload, and you’re done! The money is credited to your UserTesting account that day and transferred to your PayPal in 10 days.

The user tests vary in length. Peek tests are very short (5 minutes) and they pay $3. The majority of tests are 15 minutes long and they pay $10. Some tests are an hour long and they pay $30. There are also scheduled tests. I was accepted for one a while back that was a focus group. In that test I participated in an online closed chat room for an hour discussing a new technology and received $40 compensation.

The amount of time it takes you to complete each test may be longer or a little shorter than anticipated. The time suggested for each test is approximately how long it should take you to finish the test. I have gone over and under the expected time and haven’t been penalized. A client can ask for a refund if they are not satisfied with the test results. In that case, you would not get paid (like I said, that’s never happened to me though).

At the beginning of this post I said “I’m going to (reluctantly) share my favorite way to make money from home.” I said that because there are times when this site has very few tests available. When that’s the case, you have to be one of the fastest to accept the test before it disappears. But, a lot of the time, the site is full of tests and it isn’t an issue.

One more thing… UserTesting has an opt-in for Mobile Testing. After you apply for that, they send you a neat webcam that you use to record your phone during a mobile test. I just got mine in the mail and I’m excited to give it a try!

If you’re looking for a great way to make a little extra cash, this is an awesome company to work with. I am always paid exactly 10 days after taking a test (or tests) and I’m extremely satisfied with my time spent here. You won’t get rich, but it’s definitely worth the effort!

  1. This post was so interesting to me. Sometimes you want a simple way to earn money and this does the trick! I learned a lot…awesome information for mom’s who need a little extra and still have the joy of staying home with their kids!

  2. This is very interesting! Almost sounds too good to be true (but I trust this is not the case based on your post!). Thanks for spreading the word. Now as we all go to sign up hopefully there will still be enough tests for you to take. Haha! 🙂
